Hey there, hockey fans and photography enthusiasts! I’m Brooke Murray, a Sudbury-based photographer with a passion for capturing the energy and drama of team sports, especially hockey. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my insights into the world of team sports photography in our city, with a special focus on the various hockey leagues that keep our community’s love for the game alive.
Check out the Sudbury Soccer scene!
Let’s start with the LUG Hockey League, a haven for college students and young adults who refuse to let their hockey dreams fade away. Whether you’re a skilled playmaker, a hard-working grinder, or just someone who loves the camaraderie of the locker room, the LUG Hockey League offers a perfect opportunity to lace up your skates and hit the ice.
As a photographer, I relish the chance to capture the raw emotion and intensity that these players bring to every game. From the fierce battles along the boards to the jaw-dropping displays of skill and athleticism, the LUG Hockey League never fails to provide a visual spectacle that keeps my shutter finger busy.
Next up is the Sudbury Playground Hockey League (SPHL), an organization that truly embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and inclusivity. The SPHL’s mission is to provide a wholesome hockey experience for players, coaches, officials, and parents alike, prioritizing enjoyment and full participation over sheer hockey ability.
As a photographer, I find the SPHL’s games to be a refreshing change of pace. Instead of the high-stakes intensity of competitive leagues, I get to capture the pure joy of playing the game, the camaraderie between teammates, and the invaluable life lessons that hockey can teach us all.
Of course, no discussion of Sudbury’s hockey scene would be complete without mentioning the Sudbury Minor Hockey Association (SMHA). This tryout-based league is where the stars of tomorrow hone their skills, with teams ranging from U7 to U18.
As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing these young athletes grow and develop their talents over the years. Capturing their determination, their passion, and their ever-improving skills is a true honor, and I take great pride in preserving these moments for them and their families to cherish for years to come.
Moving on to the world of adult recreational leagues, JAM Sports is a name that resonates with hockey enthusiasts across Sudbury. With a strong emphasis on fun and inclusivity, JAM Sports offers a wide range of options for players of all skill levels and ages.
Whether you’re signing up as an individual or bringing your own team, JAM Sports provides a welcoming environment where the primary goal is to have a good time on the ice. As a photographer, I love capturing the infectious energy and camaraderie that permeates these games, as well as the hilarious moments that inevitably arise when competitive spirits collide with a light-hearted atmosphere.
Last but certainly not least, we have the Northern Hockey Academy, an institution dedicated to fostering elite-level hockey skills and development. From their meticulously planned 3-on-3 leagues to their highly competitive adult and summer leagues, the Northern Hockey Academy is where serious players go to take their game to the next level.
As a photographer, the challenge here is to capture the technical brilliance, the split-second decision-making, and the sheer athleticism that these players exhibit on the ice. It’s a demanding task, but one that I relish, as it pushes me to constantly improve my skills and anticipate the action before it unfolds.
See what working with me looks like!
Whether you’re a seasoned hockey veteran or a newcomer to the sport, Sudbury’s vibrant hockey community offers something for everyone. As a photographer, I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to document the passion, dedication, and joy that these leagues bring to our city. Every game, every shift, every goal is a chance to freeze time and preserve the moments that make hockey such a beloved part of our culture.
So, the next time you’re at a hockey game in Sudbury, keep an eye out for me behind the lens. Who knows, I might just capture the perfect shot that encapsulates the spirit of our city’s love affair with the greatest game on ice. If you would like me to capture your team, reach out here!
