As a wedding photographer based in Sudbury, I’ve had the joy of capturing countless engagement sessions, but the ones that hold a special place in my heart are those that include four-legged family members. Let me tell you, there’s something magical about incorporating your beloved pup into your engagement photos. Today, I’m sharing my professional tips on how to make your engagement session with your dog not just successful, but truly memorable.
Your dog isn’t just a pet – they’re family. They’ve been there through your relationship’s precious moments, from lazy Sunday mornings to exciting life changes. Including them in your engagement photos helps tell your complete love story. Plus, let’s be honest: dogs have an incredible way of making everyone feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera!
When planning your engagement session with your dog, location is crucial. As someone who’s photographed throughout Sudbury’s beautiful landscapes, I recommend selecting a place where your dog is familiar and comfortable. The ideal location should offer enough space to move around freely while maintaining a safe and controlled environment. I particularly love spots that provide shaded areas, especially during summer months. Some of my favorite local spots include conservation areas, quiet parks, or even your own backyard where your pup feels most at home.
I’ve learned that scheduling your session during your dog’s most relaxed time of day makes a world of difference. This means being mindful of their usual routines and avoiding their regular walk or feeding times. Consider your dog’s energy levels when planning – early morning or late afternoon sessions often work best. Weather and temperature should also factor into your timing decisions, and remember to allow extra time for breaks and treats throughout the session.
One of my top recommendations is bringing along a helper – someone your dog knows and trusts. This person becomes invaluable during the session, as they can assist with holding your dog when we’re capturing photos of just the two of you, help get your dog’s attention for photos, and manage treats and water breaks. They can also keep your pup entertained between shots, ensuring everyone stays happy and engaged throughout the session.
In the weeks leading up to your session, consider working on basic commands that will help during the shoot. Focus on fundamentals like sit and stay commands, teaching them to look at the camera when called, walking calmly on a leash, and basic positioning next to you. Remember, we’re not aiming for perfection – just enough control to capture those precious moments safely and beautifully.
I always tell my couples to pack a “puppy bag” for the session. This should include their favorite treats (pack more than you think you’ll need), water and a portable bowl, both their regular leash and a photogenic one (I love leather or fabric leads in neutral colors), favorite toys, clean-up bags, and grooming supplies for quick touch-ups. Don’t forget any special accessories you want to include, such as bandanas, bow ties, or signs.
I always begin these sessions by allowing your dog to become comfortable with the environment and my presence. We’ll take some time for them to explore the location briefly and get used to the camera. I’ll take some test shots to acclimate them to the sound, and we’ll start with simple poses that incorporate treats and rewards.
Some of my favorite shots come from letting your dog’s personality shine through naturally. We might incorporate some fetch between posed shots, capture candid walks together, or photograph genuine interactions between the three of you. I love getting down on their level for unique perspectives that truly capture their spirit.
Every dog is unique, and I adapt my approach accordingly. For high-energy dogs, we’ll incorporate more action shots and play sessions. With shy dogs, we’ll take things slower and use gentle encouragement. When working with senior dogs, we’ll plan more breaks and keep sessions shorter to ensure their comfort.

When planning your outfits, comfort should be your priority. Choose clothes you can easily move in and colors that complement your dog’s fur. I recommend avoiding materials that show pet hair easily, and always bring a lint roller – trust me on this one!
I love creating a variety of setups that showcase your relationship. We’ll capture family-style portraits with your pup front and center, dynamic shots of walking or playing together, and quiet moments of cuddles and kisses. I’ll also focus on those beautiful details – paws, tags, and those adorable furry faces. Your dog’s leash can even become a artistic element, creating leading lines in the composition.
Think creatively about how to showcase your photos in ways that celebrate your whole family. Consider creating a wall gallery with a mix of poses and candids, designing save-the-dates featuring your pup, including these images in your wedding guest book, or making special albums or prints for your home.
Remember, the key to successful engagement photos with your dog is patience, preparation, and a positive attitude. Some of the most touching moments I’ve captured have been completely unplanned – your dog’s spontaneous kiss, a playful bounce, or that loving look they give you both.
As your photographer, my goal is to capture not just how your engagement photos look, but how this special time in your life feels – including the joy, love, and fun your dog brings to your relationship. These images will be treasured memories of your entire family as you begin this exciting new chapter together.
