When I first discovered Maple Hill Farm, I was immediately struck by its rich history. This 35-acre property, formerly known as the “Despatie Maple Farm – La ferme Despatie,” has been a cornerstone of the local community since the early 20th century. As I learned more about its past, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection to the generations who had gathered here before.
The farm’s story begins in 1916 with the construction of the first ‘Maple Sugar Shack – Cabane à sucre’. This humble building quickly became a focal point for family gatherings, especially during the eagerly anticipated ‘sugaring time’. By 1920, it had evolved into a popular spot for post-church meals and celebrations.
In the mid-1950s, the property found new stewards in Lucien and Alice Despatie. Under their care, the farm took on a more commercial role, beginning to produce and sell syrup products in 1967. It was during this time that the farm also started welcoming school groups for guided tours and tastings, further cementing its place in the community.
I’ve often found myself imagining the laughter and joy that must have filled the air during the farm’s famous taffy-tasting parties. These events were a beloved tradition that continued until 2014, with a special encore in 2017 to mark 50 years of syrup production on the site.
It’s this legacy of hospitality and celebration that makes Maple Hill Farm such a special place for weddings. When couples choose this venue, they’re not just selecting a beautiful backdrop – they’re becoming part of a long-standing tradition of community gatherings and joyous occasions.

As a photographer, I’m always on the lookout for venues that offer stunning backdrops for wedding photos. Maple Hill Farm doesn’t disappoint. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Sudbury, this venue feels like a world apart, offering a perfect blend of accessibility and rural charm.
One of my favorite features of Maple Hill Farm is its covered pavilion. This intimate space can accommodate up to 60 guests for a ceremony, providing a cozy and romantic setting regardless of the weather. The pavilion’s rustic charm perfectly complements the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
For larger receptions, the property can accommodate a spacious party tent, allowing you to celebrate under the stars. And let’s not forget about the cozy fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs – it’s the perfect spot for guests to gather and chat as the evening winds down.
From a photographer’s perspective, Maple Hill Farm is a dream come true. The property boasts a variety of natural and unique backdrops that allow me to capture truly stunning wedding photos. Whether it’s the rustic charm of the sugar house, the lush greenery of the surrounding forest, or the golden light of sunset over the fields, every corner of this venue offers a new opportunity for beautiful, memorable shots.
While the natural beauty and history of Maple Hill Farm are certainly its standout features, the venue also offers a range of amenities to ensure your day runs smoothly.
One feature that my clients particularly appreciate is the access to the sugar house loft. This space can be used by the bride or groom to prepare on the wedding day, offering a private and charming getting-ready area. It’s always a joy to capture those precious pre-ceremony moments in such a unique setting.
Maple Hill Farm truly goes above and beyond to provide everything you might need for your celebration. In addition to the covered pavilion and fire pit area, the venue offers:

What truly sets Maple Hill Farm apart, in my opinion, is the current owners’ commitment to preserving the property’s historical value while continuing its tradition of hospitality. Since acquiring the farm in June 2017, Maple Hill Farm – Ferme côte d’érables Inc. has worked tirelessly to maintain the site’s connection to its maple syrup producing past while adapting it to serve as a premier wedding venue.
As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how this venue allows couples to blend time-honored traditions with their own unique love stories. There’s something truly special about seeing a bride and groom exchange vows in the same spot where families have gathered to celebrate the arrival of spring for over a century.
I can confidently say that it’s a venue that never fails to inspire. The changing seasons bring new beauty to the property, from the fresh greens of spring to the rich golds and reds of autumn. This natural cycle provides a stunning backdrop for weddings throughout the year, each one unique and breathtaking in its own way.
What I love most about photographing weddings here is the way the venue seems to bring out the best in everyone. There’s a relaxed, joyful atmosphere that permeates every event, whether it’s an intimate gathering of close family and friends or a larger celebration. The natural beauty of the surroundings seems to put everyone at ease, resulting in genuine smiles and heartfelt moments that translate beautifully on camera.
As a Sudbury-based wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to work at many beautiful venues. However, Maple Hill Farm holds a special place in my heart. Its combination of rich history, natural beauty, and modern amenities make it a truly unique option for couples looking to create unforgettable wedding memories.
Whether you’re dreaming of a rustic, intimate celebration or a larger, more elaborate affair, Maple Hill Farm offers the flexibility and charm to bring your vision to life. And as your photographer, I can assure you that this venue provides endless opportunities for stunning, one-of-a-kind images that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
If you’re considering Maple Hill Farm for your wedding, I encourage you to visit the property and experience its magic for yourself. Feel the history in the air, imagine your guests gathered in the pavilion, and picture yourself saying “I do” surrounded by the natural beauty of Northern Ontario. Trust me when I say, it’s a decision you won’t regret.
