As a wedding photographer based in Sudbury, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless couples’ special days at some truly unique venues around the city. But few places offer a setting quite as extraordinary as the iconic Science North and Dynamic Earth complexes. From the spectacular lakeside vistas to the one-of-a-kind underground spaces, these twin attractions provide an array of photo-worthy backdrops that always leave my clients awestruck.

Don’t forget to plan your engagement session!

Science North

Science North is an immensely popular science museum and attractions located in Sudbury, Ontario. It first opened its doors in 1984 and has been awing visitors of all ages with its interactive exhibits and displays ever since.

Some key facts about Science North:

  • It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ontario, welcoming over 300,000 visitors per year
  • The iconic building was designed by renowned architects Raymond Moriyama and Ted Teshima to evoke images of the Canadian Shield
  • Inside, there are over 200 interactive exhibits spread across two floors covering topics like the human body, engineering, chemistry, and more
  • A major highlight is the F.X. Cavern – a Recreation of an underground mining facility
  • Other major draws include the IMAX Theatre, Planetarium, and special touring exhibits

Dynamic Earth

Right next door to Science North is its underground companion, Dynamic Earth. This unique attraction focuses specifically on earth science and mining.

Some highlights about Dynamic Earth:

  • It first opened in 2003 as an expansion to the Science North site
  • Much of the attraction is located 7 stories below the surface in areas that were excavated from the bedrock
  • Major exhibits cover earth’s mineral resources, seismic activity, mining technology and more
  • Key features include the Epiroc Theatre, Immersion Lab, and outdoor exhibits of mining equipment
  • Perhaps its most famous space is the Vale Cavern – an enormous underground cavern blasted out of solid rock

Both facilities are located on the shores of beautiful Ramsey Lake in Sudbury, and are operated by Science North as educational resources and tourist attractions. Their unique settings and exhibits centered around science and the natural world make them popular venues for events like weddings.

If you’re getting married in Sudbury and looking for a venue that goes beyond the typical banquet hall, here’s an inside look at the Science North and Dynamic Earth experience from my photographer’s perspective.

The Personal Touches

Beyond the staggeringly unique event spaces, what I cherish most about working at Science North and Dynamic Earth are all the personal touches that make each couple’s day distinctly their own.

For instance, many of my clients love booking a private William Ramsey cruise in between the ceremony and reception. As we glide across Ramsey Lake capturing candid portraits with that iconic Sudbury skyline in the background, it provides a wonderfully tranquil interlude amidst the celebration’s excitement.

And thanks to the exceptional catering services from Bryston’s On The Park, the culinary options at these venues are just as thoughtfully curated as the spaces themselves. From locally-sourced ingredients to customized menu options, the food and drink pairings consistently exceed expectations. Check out my other favorite venors here!
