Pre-Game Chaos and Sweltering Heat

As a sports photographer in Sudbury, you learn to expect the unexpected at local games. But even I wasn’t prepared for the chain of events that preceded the Sudbury Cyclones’ home match against the Simcoe County Rovers on May 26th.

The summer temperatures were already in full swing that afternoon, with the mercury pushing 30°C as I arrived at the pitch shortly before the scheduled 3pm kickoff. I always like to get to venues early to stake out my ideal shooting locations and get a feel for the lighting conditions.

As the start time approached, District 46, the raucous and devoted Cyclones supporter group, was already making their presence felt with chants, smoke bombs, and an absolutely wild banner depicting head coach Giuseppe Politi.

Game Day Delays

Eventually, word trickled out that there had been some kind of mix-up, and the kickoff was pushed to 3:30pm.

District 46 didn’t let the delay derail them. If anything, the extra time seemed to crank up their energy and volume even more. As the temperature continued climbing, the smoke bombs gave everything an eerie, sweltering haze. It was shaping up to be a memorable day – hopefully for the right reasons on the field.

Cyclones Break Through After Scoreless First Half

Finally, both teams took the pitch just after 3:30pm with Cyclones head coach Giuseppe Politi and assistant coach Evan Phillips leading the way for the home side. Despite completely dominating possession and peppering the Rovers’ goal, the first half was only 1-0 in favor of the Cyclones on a 31st minute goal.

The Cyclones had a shot carom off the post and a few other golden chances go begging. Simcoe keeper Phanuel Gunn also had to make some brilliant saves to keep his team level. Both teams seemed to struggle a bit to find their finishing touch in the stifling heat after the lengthy pre-game delay.

Second Half Fireworks from Cyclones

Whatever pep talk Coach Politi gave at halftime clearly did the trick. The game opened up completely in the second half as the Cyclones kept their foot on the gas pedal.

In the 49th minute, Nico Portelance played a perfectly weighted through ball for Timi Aliu, who made no mistake with a clinical first-time finish to finally break the deadlock. Just four minutes later, Julian Devos turned provider, sending Donovan Bromfield in all alone to make it 3-0.

District 46 was going bonkers at this point – the smoke, chants, and celebrations creating an absolutely electric atmosphere pitchside. Their energy seemed to further spur on the Cyclones, who were well on their way to a convincing home victory.

In the 67th minute, the rout was on as substitute Stan Pankiewicz pounced on a loose ball and fired it into the roof of the net to make it 4-0.

Post-Game Reaction

Understandably, the Cyclones’ dressing room was a very satisfied bunch after such a dominant home performance. Randy Pascal of the Sudbury Star managed to grab a few words from Devos and Bromfield – the two goalscorers who helped blow things open.

“Scoring a goal is a great feeling, but being able to set up a teammate is also very rewarding,” said Devos, a crafty Belgian midfielder who had a goal and an assist on the day.

Bromfield, a former Algoma Thunderbirds striker, echoed the importance of making an impact off the bench: “Coming in as a sub, you have to show what you’ve got. We all want more minutes and chances to put the ball in the net.”

Looking Ahead

All in all, a wildly entertaining and memorable day at the office for me as a photographer. Sudbury’s next match is a 7pm start on Saturday against Pickering FC.

More hot temperatures and rambunctious District 46 antics are surely in store. Here’s hoping for another high-octane, goal-filled affair from the red-hot Sudbury Cyclones!
