FIND YOUR WAY Around

The Great North Winter Classic

There’s something magical about capturing athletic moments that might otherwise be lost in the blink of an eye. As a sports photographer based in Sudbury, I’ve had the privilege of freezing countless split-second triumphs and heartbreaks through my lens. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to document the fourth annual Great North Winter Classic at the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club, and I’m excited to share not only the images I captured but also the stories behind them.

The Tournament Landscape

The Greater Sudbury Soccer Club welcomed 40 teams to our city for this prestigious winter soccer event. The tournament created a vibrant atmosphere throughout Sudbury, with visitors arriving from Ottawa, Guelph, Richmond Hill, Barrie, Toronto, Muskoka, and a particularly strong contingent from Sault Ste. Marie.

What made this tournament particularly special was how well our local teams performed. Both GSSC Impact and Sudburnia Elite representatives claimed multiple championship titles, demonstrating the strength of soccer development in our region. The Lancer Dome was electric for two straight days, with the 6v6 indoor format creating fast-paced, intense matches that were a photographer’s dream to capture.

Setting Up for Success

Preparing for a tournament of this scale requires considerable planning. I arrived early each day to scout the venue, identify optimal shooting positions, and adjust my equipment settings for the indoor lighting conditions of the Lancer Dome. Indoor sports photography presents unique challenges—the artificial lighting can create color temperature inconsistencies, and the fast pace of indoor 6v6 soccer demands quick reflexes and anticipation.

The Difference Between Indoor and Outdoor Photography

Coach Marier described the 6v6 format as “faster paced, with more 1v1 battles,” noting that “it’s not exactly like hockey, but it’s closer to hockey than 11v11 in a sense of how you play: short shifts, keep the girls fresh.”

From a photographer’s perspective, this creates both challenges and opportunities. The accelerated pace means less time to compose shots deliberately, requiring more instinct and anticipation. However, those one-on-one battles create dramatic visual narratives—the defender and attacker locked in a contest of skill and will, their expressions revealing the intensity of the moment.

I’ve developed several techniques specific to indoor soccer photography over the years:

  1. Positioning is crucial—I typically start at the midline to capture transitions, then move behind goals during sustained attacks
  2. Pre-focusing on high-traffic areas helps capture spontaneous moments
  3. Burst mode is essential for catching the perfect frame within fast sequences
  4. Including elements of the environment (spectators, coaches) adds context and emotion to the images

Dramatic Finishes and Penalty Shootouts

One of the most challenging yet rewarding scenarios to photograph is the penalty shootout. The GSSC U18 Impact girls provided exactly this kind of drama in their final against SYSC. After receiving a late equalizing goal from Bryn Hobson (on a magnificent volley assisted by keeper Izzy Roy), the match proceeded to penalties.

Photographing penalty kicks requires split-second timing and emotional awareness. I positioned myself to capture both the kicker’s approach and the goalkeeper’s reaction. When Olivia Ferguson-Soules, Abigail Betsill, and Bryn Hobson successfully converted their penalties to secure the championship, I was ready to document their celebrations—the release of tension, the embraces of teammates, and the jubilation of supporters.

Capturing the Tournament Experience

While game action forms the core of my tournament portfolio, I make a conscious effort to document the complete experience. The quieter moments between matches, the sideline coaching interactions, the supportive parents in the stands—these elements provide context and emotional depth to the collection.

Final Reflections

As I packed up my equipment after the final championship ceremony, I couldn’t help but reflect on the privilege of my position. As a sports photographer, I’m entrusted with preserving moments that athletes and their families will cherish for decades. The determination, skill, and emotion displayed throughout the Great North Winter Classic remind me why I chose this profession.

Sudbury continues to establish itself as a vibrant soccer community and a welcoming tournament host. The success of our local teams speaks to the dedication of coaches like Doug Rosener and Brian Ashton, who balance competitive development with fostering a genuine love for the game.

I look forward to continuing to document our community’s sporting journey, capturing those split-second moments that tell stories of triumph, growth, and the pure joy of athletic competition. Until the next tournament, I’ll be reviewing, editing, and preparing galleries for the teams and families who made this weekend so special.
